I learn a lot from my readers, and the one thing I know is that they are constantly on the lookout for a good low carb tortilla chip. I know I use them in place of crackers now, and when I go to a party, I always bring a bag with me. So, if you can't get what you are used to, it causes hardship. I had been buying two types of low carb tortilla chips in the grocery stores: Trader Joe's brand and the Edge brand.
Greg writes in the comments section regarding Doritos Edge:
I just called the 800 number (800-352-4477) from a bag of Doritos Edge. "Allen" told me that the whole Edge line was discontinued because it didn't market as well as they'd have liked.
After telling him that I'm on a low-carb diet and how disappointed I was they they were discontinued, he said he pass on that info to the marketing division. He said many people had called asking for them back, and that, if enough people called to complain, they might make a comeback.
That's why I'm posting this here. Like many of the other posters, finding these chips regularly has been a major hastle. The last time I found them (two weeks ago), I also, like Lisa, bought the whole rack!!! It's not lunacy, it's survival of the 'slimmest'.
By the way, I've been on Atkins since August '04, and have lost the 50 pounds I wanted to lose, plus a couple extra pounds,(so I could cheat a little over the Holidays). Now I weigh less than when I got married (13 years ago). 6'5" and 240, sounds alot better than 6'5" and 290 (unless you're football player, which I'm not anymore)!!
Tracy, from the UK, also writes about Trader Joe's low carb tortilla chips:
I tried the low carb tortilla crisps when I was in new mexico and fell in
love....we do not have much in the way of low carb here is the uk. you
should count your self lucky you have a choice.
Would love to be able to order on the net, but they probally won't send
them...never mind
Well, there is another option for those too far away from a Trader Joe's commute and facing an empty rack of Edge products in the grocery stores. Deliciously Slim had the only tortilla chip that had a four thumbs up out of a possible four people in my family. This unanimity among my family was unprecedented in the history of reviewing low carb products!
I haven't written much about the Deliciously Slim chips since then because I honestly didn't like their online ordering setup. Well, I let them know that, and the difference between a small company and a large company is that a small company might listen. Deliciously Slim did.
If you would like to order their chips direct from them, you now can, for the low price of $2.25 a bag, but you have to buy a case (12 bags) of the same type. I have no problem buying a case because I know I will use the chips in the kids lunches, take some to church and other parties when I make my seven-layer dip so I can be assured of having something OK to eat, etc.
They come in four flavors, Black Bean (my fave), 3 Cheese, Ranch, and Lightly Salted. Go here for my initial review on the low carb tortilla chips made back in September.
To order, call Deliciously Slim directly at (877) 743-8754 and ask for Cindy. (Their online ordering does not get you this price right now.) They currently take Visa and Mastercard. And while they don't ship to the UK, a few polite (read begging) emails to the Deliciously Slim website may incent them to look at that problem.
And note: I'm not getting anything for posting this! I think it is critical that all low carbers have access to a great low carb tortilla chip so they can keep on a lower carb maintenance diet!
Pass this information on to anyone who is complaining about not being able to find Doritos Edge, etc. There is a reasonably-priced better-tasting alternative... and I want to make sure that it remains available to all.
Update: I ordered this on January 5. I received it yesterday, January 6, for a flat price of $27 (12 bags x $2.25 = $27). They didn't even charge for shipping via UPS! Everything was in order, and they tasted just as great as they did when I tried them before. We had a power outage last night, so hubby ate them with cheese! He said they were delicious too!
(And for those committed to scooping up remaining Doritos Edge products, try BJs if you have one around you. They come in white cartons.)
I miss these chips so much! I esp. am going to miss the cheese puffs. I had Publix special order me a case with all the varieties when I heard they were being discontinued. And I called Doritos to complain. If there's a petition I could sign, I would!!

I was wonderin' what happened to Doritos Edge. I thought they were pretty good. You know what else I miss? The Entenmann's line of Atkin's approved products. They are no longer available:-( Entenmann's is now marketing "low/reduced sugar" products that are 24g carbs! (Ouch) Oh, well....I guess it's back to making my own low carb cookies and cakes.

So far, the Doritos Edge Chips, are the only low carb chips I have found that tasted great. I can't believe that they were not a big hit. As many people that are on a low carb diet, they are fantastic. I found them by just dumb luck and now I wish I could find more. I didn't know they where discontinued until I found this site. This is a sad day for the low carb eaters. I think that Frito-lay gave up too soon on the trial run.

I too called Frito Lay a few months back when they discontinued the chips. The customer rep argued with me that the low carb diet wasn't as healthy as the low fat. I was so pissed, and she knew it. I thought about torching the place but was talked out of it. I couldn't find them at any store to buy as to stock up on. I am visiting the Chicago area and they have a Trader Joe's that I will visit to try their low-carb chips. I will look into the Deliciously Slim ones because I need my nachos! Walgreens just discontinued my Russell-Stover Chocolate Fudge Sauce. I am doooooooomed. But the RS website still sells them!

I too love the Russell Stover Chocolate Fudge Sauce. What is going on???? Finaally found great sugar free/low carb items (the Chocolate Sauce and the Doritos Tortilla Chips) and they are being removed from the market place. I think we low carbers are being slighted. I am going to write both companies, for what ever good that will do. I am also passing on this site to my daughter in law who is responsible for getting me back into low carb...first did it in the early 80's and if we don't rally together, we will be back to that era of nothing to eat but meat!!!!
Just for grins and giggles....WalMart has the best price on the Russell Stover low carb candies, and if you haven't tried the "Carmel Drops"--two serving package at $1.99 (whole pkg is only 1.4 carbs and 320 fabulous calories)--give them a go--little bites of heaven that will keep you from cheating.

I liked [and bought] the "Restraunt Style ?" (Plain) chips. The reason I never bought the other flavors and cheetos, and probably one of the reasons for reduced sales is they contained Partially Hydrogenated Oils, which are strictly forbidden or seriously discouraged [in any quantity] on many LC Diets (Atkins, Protein Power, et al.)
Many LCers were unaware the Plain chips did not contain PH Oils, like the flavored ones, or, they may not have cared for plain chips. Making all Doritos Edge PH Oil Free would almost certainly have increased sales, though it may not have been enough to save them.
They were near the end of the list, so I don't see why Doritos couldn't simply reformulate slightly to remove them and bring them back with a bag that says "NO HYDROGENATED OILS" and "0g TRANS FAT" to make PH Oil Avoiding LCers aware of the change. I would personally buy the Cheetos if they didn't have the PH Oils in them.
