It seems that the FDA is cracking down on the notorious "serving size" bait and switch game. Nutritional information will have to be available for the standard serving and the entire package if it can be consumed at once. My favorite offender in the low carb area is the low carb burrito that is being sold at Costco. The serving size is a half of a burrito. (Like who eats a half?)
Anyhow, we now find out why Coke came out with C2. (Certainly not for low carbers!) They will be able to offer the big sizes of C2 at the same calorie count of the old Coke. Since those 20 oz. sodas actually have 2 1/2 servings, I'm sure that most people will fall out of their chair when they read the full nutrition label that will soon be required by the FDA. According to Coke:
The modified packaging labels will provide expanded Nutrition Facts information to help consumers choose the beverages that are right for them. Nutrition Facts information -- including calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates, sugars and protein -- will be stated on the basis of both a standard eight- ounce serving and the entire bottle. Currently, in accordance with FDA regulations, labels carry nutrition information for an eight-ounce serving and indicate the total number of servings per package.
This also explains the recent spate of the 100 calorie packs of foods. I certainly am not complaining! I think this is a good thing. It took me a while to ALWAYS look at the number of servings per container. Now, we'll see if these new regulations do anything about that 1/2 of a burrito serving size.
