Canada -- The Nanny Country
I'm appalled. I know I shouldn't write this and publish it, this is why the mainstream media has editors, but I am truly appalled. Canada is showing signs of "group think, stuck in the mud think" that is jaw dropping. It is actually outlawing low carb labels of all sorts -- even within the name like CarbWell. Health Canada says that there is no scientific basis. What? They can't read major medical journals?
And what about low carb for diabetics? Doesn't this labeling help them? Isn't this the fundamental way that diabetics can control their blood sugar?
What about study, and this study, and more and more and more and more studies.
And what about low carb for kids with epilepsy?
How are people and parents going to find these products if the companies are not allowed to label them? Should I be thrilled because I will get more page views because people will have to go online to get their grocery shopping information because it will be well nigh impossible to find new, appropriate products in Canada without looking at the back labels of everything?
According to the article,
"There was -- and still is -- no reason from a nutrient point of view to be concerned with the amount of carbs that we eat," Health Canada spokeswoman Carole Saindon told the Star.
Yeah, right.
Update: Levi in this post is much more logical in his arguments. He also talks about where and when Health Canada got the data to make this decision.
I think that Carole Saindon and the whole Health Canada team should go take the course that Laura describes here, Attention Doctors! Education on Low Carb Diets!
And here is yet another study that says that even slightly elevated blood sugars are bad.
