Grocery Circular Shopping List for Low Carb Foods

To see an everyday list of low carb foods that I buy on a consistent basis, please click here for the tried and tested low carb shopping list. From there, you can also see a printable format.

To see new low carb sales in grocery store and drugstore chains (always check because many sales are promoted by the food manufacturer and take place at chains not even listed), plus coupons, please click on the grocery circular low carb shopping list index. The newest post will always be at the top, and you can scroll down for historical data if you would like.

These prices are primarily effective for January 9 through January 17, 2004 (last year). See each individual grocery store for exact dates.

Market Basket
Effective Sunday, January 11, through Saturday, January 17

Market Basket has their "diet" options underneath the header "Solutions for your New Year's Resolutions". Nice touch. (Although I really liked Stop & Shop's emphasis last week on grouping items whether you wanted low fat, low carb, or low calorie.

Market basket is now carrying Atkins cereal, and it is on sale for $3.99 a box. I haven't yet tried the Atkins cereal I bought last week from Stop & Shop during their 25% off Atkins sale, which were 2 for $7, so slightly cheaper.

Atkins Quick Cuisine is $2.99 a box, Atkins Shakes $6.99 a four pack, Atkins Endulge Candy, 99 cents a bar, (the best deal for Atkins bars are at Wal-mart), Atkin's Quick Quisine Ketchup, $2.99. Country Kitchen Low Carb Wheat Bread, which I love, is 2 for $4. Arnold Low Carb Breads are $2.99 a loaf. (You can get 2 loaves at BJs for $4.79)

However, they are also debuting Middle East Low Carb Pita at 2 for $3. I have to try these and compare them to my favorites La Tortilla Wraps.

Market basket has one section devoted to Atkins products. It will be interesting to see where they put the cereals. They just got these into the store because they weren't selling them before. (They also sell the big bags of Splenda next to the sugar for $6.99.)

Shaws
Effective Friday, January 9 through Thursday, January 15.

Shaws has taken a different approach to advertising the products. The diet and low carb products are sprinkled throughout the circular.

All Thomas' products are 50 cents off, so I assume that means the low carb bagels as well.

Breyer's CarbSmart ice cream is 2 for $3, a very good price! And Klondike's CarbSmart ice cream bars are 2 for $5, also a very good price. (I have to update my Shaw's grocery list to include these items now.)

GeniSoy Low Carb Tortilla Chips, 2 for $5. Excellent price! Stop & Shop had them on sale for $2.99 last week. (See my review of low carb snack chips.)

Darielle low carb pasta is $2.49 a bag. I haven't tried this yet because I use Bella Vita, but it seems like an excellent price!

Where Shaws falls down is with the Atkins shakes, it is $8.99 for 4. You can get them at Trader Joe's for $6.99 everyday and Market Basket is advertising them at $6.99 this week.

Jif peanut butter is 2 for $5, but I don't know if this includes the Simply Jif low sugar peanut butter because it isn't pictured or listed.

They advertise a pound of strawberries for $3.49. A good price for strawberries around here at this time of year.

Shaws also has a section devoted to low carb products. It has really expanded. Although in my store, the dried fruits split the section, which can be a little disconcerting if you are not familiar with low carb brands and you have to know to look further down the aisle to see their full product selection.

Stop & Shop
Effective Sunday, January 11, through Saturday, January 17.

Stop & Shop features their diet products on the front page this week.

Stop & Shop continues with the Atkins Cereal and Quick Quisine sale at 2 for $7. Baking Mixes are also 25% off.

Stop & Shop is also debuting three new products this week!

* Snapple a Day low carb fruit mixes. (This should be interesting. I'll let you know carb count, taste, etc.)

* Stop & Shop Bake shop low carb cookies made in their store bakery. 10 cookies for $4.99 in choclate chip, brownie, or oatmeal rasin.

* Slim Fast 2g. net carb shakes. (Remeber to go to Wal-mart or Sam's Clubs on January 10 to pick up free samples.)

EAS carb control drinks or bars are 50% off regular retail. (I am not very good at highlighting bars or most shakes becuase I don't use them regularly. If you would like me to track them more closely, please let me know.)

Stop & Shop's Low Carb section is in the middle of a disaster/upheaval. They have some products in a diet section, they have some on an endcap, and they have some in a special exercise aisle. It doesn't seem stable. They also don't have a regular low carb pasta besides the pre-flavored Atkins stuff. How can you have a good selection of product if you don't have a regular low-carb pasta? They don't carry Splenda-sweeetened soda in cans. They don't carry my favorite lower carb pasta sauce, Emeril's Roasted Red Pepper Pasta Sauce. On the other hand, they do carry Country Kitchen Lite rolls, so you can give your kids a whole wheat lower carb hamburger or hot dog roll. (I can't find any other grocery stores that carry it regularly.) They do carry a big selection of the Musselman applesauce sweetened with Splenda. (Market Basket carries only one flavor.) They are also expanding their low carb line to their bakery, which shows a big commitment.

'I love to go shopping. I love to freak out salespeople. They ask me if they can help me, and I say, 'Have you got anything I'd like?' Then they ask me what size I need, and I say, 'Extra medium.' - Steven Wright
